I know various cultures believe that if you travel too fast some part of you takes time to catch up – well, I am starting to believe it. Another day, another aeroplane, and another day of feeling strangely disconnected – as if watching life through a screen. As one of the band put it “just enjoy it, you have to pay a lot of money for drugs that do this to you”.
Fortunately I have a daughter on tour with me, who, despite feeling much the same, encourages me onwards. So after checking into the hotel in Toronto, we both avoided the temptation of a freshly made bed, and walked to the waterfront, where we snoozed for an hour in the sunshine.
We then bought a trip on a big three-masted sailing ship that does tourist trips of the harbour. A slightly strange experience as I am used to captaining or crewing, not sitting idle – but I had to be content with helping to haul up the sails (which fluttered uselessly if photogenically in the slight breeze as we motored around), and being entertained by the crew in a manner that was rather too reminiscent of a Thompson childrens’ holiday camp. But the sea air and the sunset made it unquestionably worth it - even if we did seem to be appreciating it slightly more though my camera than in our not-quite-sure what-day-or-city-it-is reality.
